Funnily Euno is correct - the Natter HAD a metal armor plate between
cockpit and rocket launcher... although it wasn't installed to help
the pilot.
Test flights showed the Natter to be tail-heavy - to counter that they
needed weight in the front, and the designers decided to use an armor
plate as counter-weight so they'd get a bit more pilot protection as a

If you read Mason 'The Hawker Hurricane' there are pics of Hind and
Hurricane fuselage main members - about as identical as you can get..

Everytime I look at the Russian planes it seems to me they got the
better German designers than the USA did.
I feel more natural aerodynamics in their body styles & all things in
relation to symmetry for aerodynamics.

That situation would only have an effect if there were other, more
conventional interceptors in position to take advantage of the looser
formation.
If the conventional interceptors were available, and able to get past the
escorts, there wouldn't be any need for the Natters at all.
But the escorts weren't going away.
